To create a comprehensive Esoteric framework, we can map the ancient Greek underworld choices onto the wisdom literature of the Book of Proverbs.
In Proverbs, the soul is presented with an identical cosmological fork in the road: the choice between Lady Wisdom (Sophia), who offers the cool waters of eternal life,
and the Seductress (The Strange Woman / Dame Folly), whose house is a literal gateway to the underworld (Sheol).
Proverbs 14:12 serves as the ultimate spiritual warning for this cosmic crossroads: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” NOTE: Death, Esoterically understood = mortality, incarnation, and reincarnation, the cycle of rebirths.
This perfectly mirrors the uninitiated soul rushing toward the glowing White Cypress, thinking it has found relief, only to drink from Lethe and suffer spiritual erasure. A Further NOTE: A-Lethia = Truth, not forgetting, no longer lazy, lethargic. The letter A in front of a Greek word is called an alpha privative and negates what comes next, hence Alethia = no river Lethe, no forgetting, no more laziness, lukewarmness, etc.
